The last bus left the arena with its doors open and two people hanging off the step.
Wyatt lay on the trailer floor on a stack of coats, awake.
His head was in my lap, and a Guard medic's hand lay flat on his chest.
The Peterbilt pulled up the long white ramp for the last time, and behind us the herd came down the street.
They filled it from wall to wall, the whole gray tide.
They were coming back toward the emptied arena with the sirens gone from their ears.
They didn't look at the truck.
They went for the building, where the last sound in the city was still humming.
It was a generator no one had thought to shut off.

The temperature fell eighteen degrees in two hours.
By dark it was ten.
