Chapter 14: The Net Loft
Harborline's new captain put his bow into the fender piles at slack water, heard Ruel say no on channel 16, and went home.
By midnight we were in the net loft above the Portuguese club's six empty slips.
The old tuna nets lay heaped in a long bed under the roof beams, soft with age and smelling of salt and tar.
I had spread my father's pea coat over them, and Ruel had shut the loft door against the wind.
"Take your boots off," I said.
"They're off."
"Then take the rest."
He stripped in the lamplight from the dock, slowly, and I watched him do it from the nets with my knees up.
When he was bare, I rose onto my knees and kissed the old scar under his ribs.
His hand went into my hair.
"Lie down with me," I said. "On your side. Behind me."
He lay down against my back and pulled me in with one arm across my waist.
The whole length of him was hot against me.
I felt him already hard against the curve of my ass, and I pressed back into it on purpose.
He swore into my hair.
"Slow, Captain."
"I know how to be slow," I said.
"Do you?"
"Hold there and find out."
He laughed, a huff of breath on my neck, and then his mouth was there, open and wet, just under my ear.
He kissed down the side of my throat to my shoulder and bit it gently.
His hand slid from my waist up to my breast and cupped it, heavy in his palm.
He rolled my nipple between two fingers until I arched.
"Ruel."
"I know."
"No, don't know," I said. "Do."
"Patience," he said, and kissed the back of my neck.
His other arm lay under my head, and I turned my face into his bicep and breathed him in.
His free hand traveled down my stomach, over the soft swell of it.
He always touched that part of me slowly, and I had stopped flinching.
It slid between my thighs from behind.
He found me wet, and he made a low pleased sound against my shoulder.
"All that for me."
