Chapter 15: The Correction
Ruel's POV
I wrote Noelle one line on Saturday morning, in the truck, with the engine off.
I did not need to look up her number.
I had known it by heart for five years, and three years away had not changed that.
*Don't write me again. I'm with someone.*
I read it twice and checked it for anything I might be hiding behind.
There was nothing in it but the fact.
I sent it, and I put the phone face down on the seat, and I felt lighter at once.
I had been carrying that unanswered text for a month, and I had not known the weight until I set it down.
The Port of San Diego's records office opened at nine.
I was at the counter at five to.
The clerk was a young man with a lanyard and a cold.
He looked at the roll of drawings under my arm with open dread.
"These are the true berth plans for the Tenth Avenue pier," I said. "Surveyed last week, stamped, and signed by me."
"Signed by you as what?"
