Chapter 18: Her Name

The captain's cabin on the Santa Rita was six feet wide, and the bunk took up half of it.

My father had slept in that bunk for thirty years.

I sat on the edge of it with my back against the bulkhead and my bare feet on Ruel's shoulders.

He knelt on the deck between my knees, with his shirt gone and the brass lamp turning his skin to bronze.

"Tell me where you want me," he said.

"Here."

I put my hand on the back of his head and drew it down.

He kissed the inside of one thigh and then the other, slowly, with his stubble rasping on my skin.

I felt every scrape in my belly.

"You smell of salt," he murmured.

"I was on the water all day."

"I like it."

He kissed me, a long open kiss, right where I was wet.

I jerked and knocked my head against the bulkhead, and he laughed softly against me.

"Careful, Captain."

"Don't stop," I said.

"Wasn't planning to."

His tongue went flat and warm along my folds, from bottom to top, and rested on my clit.

He circled it once, slowly.

I gripped the blanket in both hands.

He found a rhythm so patient that I wanted to scream.

Then he slid one hand up my thigh and spread me open with his thumb.

He licked into me, and over me.

He drew my clit between his lips and sucked it gently, over and over.

I heard myself make a noise I did not know I could make.

"Slow ahead," he said into me.

"You can't say that with your mouth full."

"I just did."

I laughed, and it broke into a moan.

He slid two fingers into me and curled them, and his mouth closed on my clit and pulled.

The climb began at once, and I knew it would be quick.

"Ruel, I'm going to."

"Hold there."

"I can't," I said.

"You can."

He lifted his mouth and pressed his fingers deep and kept them still.

I shook.

The cabin lamp swam.

He held me on the brink with his steady hand and his dark eyes on my face.

The pleasure ached and tightened in me.

"Good," he said, low. "That's so good. Stay with me. Look at me."

I looked.
