Chapter 19: The Chain
On the second of June, at seven in the morning, a white van came down the gravel road.
It held a locksmith and four men in Braddock windbreakers.
The man in front carried a heavy steel chain over his shoulder.
I stood in the open yard gate with my arms folded.
"Ma'am," he said. "The notice expired at midnight. We're here to close the yard."
"I know what the notice said."
"Then you'll step aside."
"No," I said.
He looked at me, and then he looked past me, and his face changed.
Behind me, filling the gravel lot from the shed to the sea wall, stood the dock families.
There were longshoremen in orange vests, with their wives and their grown sons.
My three aunts stood in the front row in black dresses, with rosaries wrapped around their fists.
Anselmo stood at my right shoulder with his cap on.
Out on the water, a line of small boats lay across the mouth of the slip.
They were the old tuna skiffs, nine of them, and every captain at the tiller had a white mustache or a white beard.
