Chapter 22: The House

Jessa's POV

The press had the whole back row of the courtroom on Friday.

Somebody had found the gala video and posted it, and four million people had watched Kendra fall.

Overnight I'd become a name, with a hashtag.

I wore the plain gray suit I'd bought for the custody hearing, with the garnet under my collar.

Landon sat at the far table with two new lawyers.

His mother's lawyer wasn't there.

Marilyn herself wasn't there.

The seat where she should have been was empty, and the room kept glancing at it.

The judge was a different one this time, a tall man with a tired voice and half-moon glasses.

"We are here on the property settlement between Landon Carrington and Jessa Winslow Carrington," he said. "I have read the agreement. Before I approve it, I want the prenuptial clause read into the record."

"Your Honor," Landon's lawyer said, "my client concedes."

"I'm sure he does. I'd like it read anyway."

My lawyer stood up.

"Section Nine," she said. "Drafted by Mrs. Marilyn Carrington, and signed by both parties three years ago."

She cleared her throat.

"If either spouse is unfaithful to the other during the marriage, the unfaithful spouse forfeits the marital home at Larkwood and shall pay the other four million dollars within ninety days."

A murmur went around the press row.

"Mutual," the judge said.

"Yes, Your Honor. Mrs. Carrington wrote it to catch a daughter-in-law. It caught her son."

"Objection," Landon's lawyer said, and then, at a look from Landon, sat back down.

My lawyer opened a folder.

"Exhibit D. Nine months of emails between Mr. Carrington and Ms. Albright. The first is dated the previous January."

She laid out a second folder.

"Exhibit E. A jeweler's receipt for the necklace Mr. Carrington gave her in March."
