Chapter 11: Co-Trustee
The trust lawyer's voice came out of the speakerphone on Weston's desk.
"Mr. Aldrich, I have bad news about Carrington Bank."
It was ten the next morning, and Weston stood at his window with his hands in his pockets.
I sat in the leather chair across from his desk because he had asked me to come, and because he had said please.
I had a coffee in my hand and my coat on, and I had not yet decided to stay.
"Say it plainly," Weston said.
"The refinancing closes in three weeks."
"Carrington Bank has agreed to the terms, but the loan documents require both trustees of the Aldrich Family Trust to sign."
"Both trustees. Me and my mother."
"Not your mother." The lawyer coughed. "Your mother resigned her trusteeship in the year your grandfather died. Under the instrument, the second seat belongs to the beneficiary's spouse."
The room went quiet.
Weston turned from the window.
