Chapter 17: The Play
Ottilie wrote The Forged Petition in four days, at the kitchen table, with a pot of tea and a view of the stove door.
She wrote it fast and badly and then well.
On the fifth morning she nailed it to the barn wall.
The company stood in front of it with their hands behind their backs, in a row.
"It's a comedy," she said. "Nobody dies. A tyrant in black silk writes three letters in one afternoon and ruins three women and herself. The women find out at a kitchen table. Then there is a pie."
"There is always a pie," said the prompter.
"This one is thrown."
"By whom?" the prompter asked.
"By the heroine's friend, at the wall, in act two. Practice, please."
Her leading man read the Dowager.
He was fifty and vain, and he took to it with great joy.
He wore black silk and a coil of silver wool on his head, and walked with a cane, and said every line in a small, cold, perfect voice.
When he said, "A name is worth three women, and I should know, I have counted," the sisters who played the maids had to leave the barn.
Calista, Elowen and Ottilie herself played the three heroines.
