Chapter 30: The Man Who Signs

Evander Quist watched the Princess of Halvar take off her ring.

She did it without drama, in the silence after the word.

It was a plain gold band set with one pearl, the betrothal ring she had worn since the night of the ball.

She laid it on the Archbishop's open book.

"Your Majesty," she said to the King, in her clear, low voice. "I came to Aldermere to marry a man. I find I have been offered a signature."

A groan went round the nobility.

"I do not break an engagement lightly. I break this one in front of two thousand witnesses, so that nobody may say my father's house was kept in the dark. The dowry stays in Halvar."

She inclined her head.

"I should like to go home."

"Highness," said the King, "you will have an escort."

The Princess walked down the aisle alone, the way she had come in.

At the door she paused, and turned her head, and looked once at the back bench, where Ottilie stood in scarlet with her hand over her mouth.

She nodded.

Then the great doors closed behind her.

Evander turned his eyes to the altar.

Aldric Voltraine stood with his arms at his sides.

He looked like a boy who has been held up to his own mirror.

Beside him the Dowager Marchioness of Voltraine, who had not moved once since the question, took a step forward.
