Chapter 31: Voltraine Hall

The three of them walked up the front drive of Voltraine Hall at dusk on the day after the wedding that was not.

Nobody had told them to use the front.

Calista had simply started up the gravel.

Ottilie fell in on one side and Elowen on the other.

They went slowly, in the gold light, with the melt running in the ditches.

Behind them came the village.

There were the mill hands in their Sunday coats, and the players with their trunks, and the blacksmith's wife with a ham.

Evander walked at the very back, with his tin, and let them go first.

The great door stood open.

The footman who had once bowed to Calista was there, with the key held out in both hands.

"The Chancellor's order, my lady," he said. "The household is to be given into the hands of the Crown's creditors. That would be you."

"That would be us," said Calista.

"The Marquis asks whether he might lodge above the coach house," the footman added. "He has nowhere else."

"At a rent," said Calista. "He may pay it on the first of the week."

She took the key.

It was heavy, black iron, as long as her hand.

She turned and held it up to the light so the whole drive could see.

"Well," said Ottilie. "Where do I put the stage?"

They went in.

They went through the great hall, with its black and white tiles and its faint smell of damp.
