Chapter 21: What He Didn't Say
The doors shut, and the hall was empty except for him.
Gaspare came down the length of the table without hurrying.
He stopped one step from me.
He looked at my face, and then, slowly, at my arms, my hands, the black thread in the hem.
He was checking me for wounds.
"You walked through my gate," he said.
"Yes."
"With my driver."
"I made him."
"You made him."
"I held a pistol on him. Don't be angry with him, he was perfectly brave."
"I am not angry with him."
"Then who are you angry with?"
"No one," he said. "I came in here this morning to hear that you had left the city, and I stood at the head of my own table and told twelve men a thing I never told you."
"The island."
"Yes."
"You said it to twelve capos before you said it to me."
"I know."
"Why?"
"Because I thought you were gone, and it was the only true thing I had."
I looked at him.
I had meant to be angry, and I was.
The anger was under my ribs where it had always been.
But he stood in front of me with his hands at his sides and his tie loosened, and I found that I could not hit him again.
"You sent me away," I said.
"Rosaria."
"You did. You sat there and let my family decide, and then you wrote me a new name and a passport and a house on an island. You sent me away and you called it keeping me alive."
"I know how it looked."
"It wasn't how it looked. It was what you did."
"Yes."
He did not argue.
It was the first time in nine years I had said that to him straight, and he stood and took it.
"Why didn't you say it?" I asked. "That night in your study. When my mother said Rosaria is strong. When my father said it was only for a while. Why didn't you say, she doesn't have to go?"
