Chapter 22: Two Bedrooms
The first page was a deed.
It was in Italian and English, stamped by a registry in British Columbia, and it named an island of forty hectares, with a house.
I read the names on it twice.
Rosaria Lanzetta.
Gaspare Lanzetta.
The date was two years and four months old.
"Before the war," I said.
"Before any of it."
"You bought it for us."
"For you. Then for us."
I turned the page.
There were photographs of the villa, white and square, halfway up a green hill with the sea behind it.
There was a letter from a housekeeper in a town on the coast, confirming the keys.
There was a plan of the upstairs, drawn in his square handwriting.
Two bedrooms.
One had a note in pencil: East window, she'll want the light.
The other said: Mine. Doesn't matter.
I put my hand over my mouth.
Underneath the plans was a navy passport.
It had my husband's face in it, ten years younger and clean-shaven, and the name Elio Marchetti.
"Elena's brother," I said, in a voice that was not quite mine.
"A widow shouldn't live alone."
"You were coming."
"After the war. When Ficarra was finished and the Family had a new head. I'd have let them bury me too, in a month or a year. Nobody looks for a dead Don."
"You were going to die."
"Yes."
"You were going to let me read it in the newspaper."
"I'd have sent word."
"By whom?"
"By Nella."
I looked up.
Nella stood in the study door.
She had come in without a sound, as she always did, with her notebook against her chest.
