Chapter 14: The Chairman's Fourteen Points
The Chairman's briefing on how to keep a husband ran to fourteen points and took forty minutes.
He gave it in the study on Sunday night, with the baby asleep on his shoulder and a legal pad on his knee.
"Point one," he said. "Buy him nothing."
"He doesn't like expensive gifts," said Su Ye. "I know. I bought a truck of roses."
"Point two. You bought a truck of roses."
"Mom said flowers."
"Your mother said a flower." The Chairman turned the pad. "Point three, carry something. Anything. A man who sees you carry will believe you can."
Su Ye opened his mouth to object, and found nothing in it.
Mrs. Su, from the sofa, lifted her teacup an inch.
"Point four," she said. "Find out when he was born."
"He's twenty-two."
"Find out when."
At the bottom of the list, the Chairman had written, in capitals, POINT FOURTEEN: ROCKING CHAIR FACES EAST, and underlined it twice.
Su Ye left the study with the baby on one arm and the list in his teeth.
In the morning he carried the briefcase.
It stood by the front door like a small black safe, and he got both hands round the handle and lifted.
It was heavier than the baby.
Lu Chen came down the stairs with a steel lunch tin and stopped on the last step.
"Put that down."
"No."
"It has eleven kilos of files in it."
"I have excellent arms." Su Ye took three steps toward the car and his face changed color. "Mostly I have the left one."
The driver opened the door, and Su Ye did not hand him the case.
He carried it down the drive, up the car's step and onto the back seat, where he sat with it on his knees, gasping, and looked at the road with great pride.
