Chapter 13: The Offer

Vince did not get up.

He never got up when he wanted me to come to him.

"Shut the door, baby," he said. "You're letting the rain in."

I did not shut it.

I looked at Lou, and Lou looked at his own knees.

"Don't blame him," Vince said. "He kept his mouth closed for a week. My man followed him to a gym on Penn Avenue, that's all."

"You followed Lou."

"I follow everything I own."

He said it pleasantly.

On the nightstand beside him was a sealed bottle of water from the motel office.

He picked it up and held it out to me.

"You're soaked through. Drink."

I kept both hands in my jacket pockets.

He looked at the bottle, and then at me, and his smile got wider.

"Still won't. Good girl." He set it back down. "Twelve years of Lou and he never broke you of it. I'd have been disappointed."

"What do you want?"

"Come in and I'll tell you. Or stand there and I'll tell you anyway."

I took one step inside and left the door open behind me.

The wind blew rain across the carpet, and Lou flinched.

"Three things," Vince said, and he counted them on his fingers. "One. You come home. There's a card at the Armory in four weeks, and you're on it. Your belt, your name, a rematch with the girl I signed. Nobody ever has to know why you left."
