Chapter 11: I Knew Too

Preston's smile slipped for the first time since he'd walked through the gate.

"You know what?"

"I've known since the night they were born," Keith said.

He said it to the whole yard.

"I'm the one who signed the birth certificates. I'm the one who got up at three in the morning for four years. Milo and June are my children, and you are standing in front of their cake."

"Biology says otherwise."

"Biology doesn't know their middle names. I do."

A father by the bounce house muttered, "Damn right."

Connie had already scooped up June and was walking her toward the back door with one hand over the child's ear.

I got to Milo before he could ask a single question and held him against my legs.

"Mama, why is the man yelling?"

"He isn't yelling, baby."

"He's loud."

"He is," I said. "Come inside and help Grandma with the plates."

When I looked back, Keith had put his hand flat against Preston's chest.

Not a shove.

Just a hand, steady, and the larger man stepped back.

"Camera off," Keith told the young man with the shoulder rig. "This is a child's birthday."

The red light stayed on.

"Turn it off," said a mother, "or I'll put it in the cake."

The red light went out.

Preston looked around at forty faces and finally understood that no one in the yard was on his side.

"This isn't over," he said, with his teeth showing. "I'll see you both soon."

He took his gifts and went out through the gate, and I heard the car door slam, and then Connie called the children to cake as if nothing had happened.
