Chapter 5: Red Wine on His Shoes

The preschool fundraiser was Friday night in the church hall next door.

I had done the flowers for free, forty mason jars of orange dahlias along the long tables, and I stood at the back checking that none of them had tipped.

Keith stood beside me in his good gray jacket.

His mother had taken the table by the stage and put her purse on the chair next to hers, which meant we were sitting there.

"Don't look at the door," Keith said quietly.

"Why would I look at the door?"

"Because you've looked at it six times."

I looked at it a seventh time, and Preston Dade walked in.

He wore a dark suit, no tie, and he came in with the preschool director on his arm.

Every parent in the room turned.

"He gave the new playground," Connie said into her wine. "Fifty thousand dollars, I heard. Last week."

"He did what?"

"Mm."

She looked at her son, and he looked at his plate.

Within ten minutes, the director had walked Preston to our table.

"Mr. and Mrs. MacGowan, this is Chef Dade, our newest donor. I told him your wife did the flowers."

Preston held out his hand to Keith.

"Pleasure," he said. "Your wife does beautiful work."

"She does," Keith said.
