Chapter 7: Connie's Kitchen
On Saturday I took the twins to Connie's for pancakes and ambushed her at the stove.
"You said to ask him about the hospital," I said.
"I did."
"He won't answer. So I'm asking you."
Connie flipped a pancake without looking at me.
"Grandma, mine's burned," Milo announced from the table.
"Burned is crunchy," Connie said. "Crunchy is a feature."
"I want a feature," said June.
She was wearing one red boot and a paper crown from the preschool.
Connie put two small plates in front of them, poured syrup, and then took me by the elbow and steered me to the back porch.
The screen door slapped shut behind us.
"I'm not going to tell you what's his to tell," she said. "I promised him in a corridor at four in the morning, and I don't break those."
"What corridor?"
"The one outside the maternity ward." She folded her arms against the cold. "He came out of your room with his face gone gray. I was in the waiting chair. He sat next to me and took out his wallet and held two little bracelets in his hand for an hour. He never said a word."
"Connie."
"At six, a nurse brought him coffee, and he drank it, and he went back in and kissed you on the forehead."
My throat closed.
I remembered that kiss.
I had thought it was the happiest moment of my life.
