Chapter 21: The Carriage House
Nora's POV
I ran.
So did half the lawn, in heels and good shoes, with the cameras bobbing along behind.
By the time I reached the end of the drive, the garage doors were pouring gray smoke into the maples, and a red glow was moving behind the high windows.
Delphine came up beside me, gasping, with Teddy against her chest.
"Take him," she said. "Please. Take him back, away from this."
I took him.
He was warm and heavy, and he put both fists in my dress and started to cry.
"My book," he said into my neck. "Nora, my boat book."
"We'll get you another one."
"It's on the cot!"
A man in a gray work jacket came around the corner of the carriage house at a dead run.
He was carrying a red plastic can in one hand.
He saw three hundred people and a sheriff, and he stopped so hard he skidded.
For a second we all just looked at one another.
Then the young deputy hit him from the side, and the can went rolling across the gravel, and the smell of gasoline came up thick over the smoke.
"Get off me!" the man shouted into the dirt. "He said noon! He said do it at noon if it went wrong!"
"Who said?" the sheriff asked, behind me.
"Mr. Rowntree! He paid me in September for the generator, and he said if it went bad..." He broke off and spat gravel. "He said Edith's old garage would be a shame to lose."
Nobody on the gravel said anything.
Two cameras swung to where Graham was standing, between his deputies, with his tie loose.
