Chapter 16: The Broken Drawer
"I'll come in Friday," I told the woman from human resources. "I'll bring my lawyer's letter, and I'll answer anything you ask in front of his manager."
"Thank you, Ms. Westerby. I'll set it up."
I hung up and found three texts from Carrie.
*Come home at five. Don't ask.*
*I mean it.*
*Also bring ice cream.*
At five, the spare room smelled of sawdust.
Levi was on his knees in front of the dresser with the broken drawer across his lap and a toolbox open on the floor.
Biscuit sat on the toolbox lid, supervising.
"I told her not to," he said before I spoke. "She said it was payment for the nights I wasn't sleeping on her curb."
"She says that about everything."
"She also said you'd bring ice cream."
I held up the bag.
He smiled with half his mouth, and I realized I hadn't seen him do it before.
I sat on the futon and ate rocky road out of the carton while he worked.
His hands were scarred across the knuckles, with a white line down one thumb and a flat, dented nail on the other.
He slid a thin shim into the corner of the drawer and tapped it home with the heel of his palm.
"The runner was cracked," he said. "Whoever built this used staples."
"Carrie's landlord."
"Probably the same man who built the world."
I laughed, a real one, and it surprised both of us.
He set the drawer in its slot and slid it out and in twice.
It ran so smoothly that Biscuit jumped down to check.
