Chapter 6: Carrie's Spare Room

I made it a block and a half before I asked Carrie to pull over.

I threw up in the gutter outside a dry cleaner's while she held my hair.

"Okay," she said, rubbing my back. "That's either nerves or the world's worst stomach flu."

"It's neither."

She stopped rubbing.

"Leah."

I wiped my mouth on the back of my hand and looked at her.

"I'm six weeks," I said.

Carrie stared at me for a long moment.

Then she started to cry, right there on the curb in her scrub pants, and grabbed me so hard my ribs creaked.

"After two years," she said into my shoulder. "Oh my God. Does he know?"

"No."

"Did you tell him last night?"

"I was going to tell him on the plane," I said. "Then I heard him on a patio, laying five hundred dollars on a bet that I'd drive his girlfriend to the airport."

"His what?"

"His best friend."

"Girlfriend," Carrie said firmly, and opened the passenger door for me.

Her apartment was on the third floor, over a bakery that opened at six.

The spare room had a futon, a dresser with one broken drawer and a window that looked at a brick wall.

It also had a gray cat, already asleep on the pillow.

"That's Biscuit," Carrie said. "She doesn't work here. She just won't leave."

I sat on the futon and put the silver suitcase between my knees.

Carrie lifted the cat, turned back the blanket and pointed at the bed.
