Chapter 24: Porch Light
I went out to the gate and shut the front door behind me.
Sam and Cody stayed in the hall, where I could hear them not moving.
Robin held out the envelope across the gate.
Across the street, a porch light came on, and then another.
She saw it and did not leave.
"Eleven thousand dollars," she said. "Colleen paid me eight up front, in cash, for the copies of your papers. I never spent it. The other three is what I took out of your savings account, using your own papers."
Her voice was steady.
"I'm sorry I did any of it."
I took the envelope.
It was heavier than money should be.
"There's more," she said, and handed me a folded page.
It was a statement on county letterhead, signed and dated that afternoon.
In her own handwriting, Robin said she had signed Joanna Abernathy's name to the deed without permission.
She wrote that Jo had known nothing.
"It's going to the county tomorrow," she said. "With a copy to the sheriff, if you want to press it."
"Do you expect me to?"
"I expect nothing."
I looked at my sister.
She had the gray coat on, and no makeup, and she looked younger and more tired than I had ever seen her.
"I resigned from the school today," she said. "I couldn't walk down that hall and tell a child to tell the truth."
