Chapter 7: The Showroom
The dealership had balloons tied to every car on the lot.
It was the following Saturday, and a banner over the doors said Weekend Sales Event.
Robin parked her gray sedan crooked across two spaces and killed the engine.
"I'm coming in," she said.
"You hate confrontations," I said.
"I hate it when people hurt you more." She pulled her cardigan straight. "I'll stand behind you. You don't even have to look at me."
I had never been more grateful for her.
I had printed the insurance company's letter the night before.
It was one page, with a signature box at the bottom, and it needed Carlton to sign it in front of a witness.
The company had called it a withdrawal of the owner's request.
I had a simpler name for it.
We pushed through the glass doors into the smell of new tires and carpet cleaner.
Carlton sat at his desk in the middle of the showroom floor with a couple in front of him, going through a brochure.
When he saw me his smile slid off.
He stood up.
"Jo. This isn't the place."
"It's the only place I know you'll be," I said. "I'll be quick."
The couple went quiet.
A salesman near the espresso machine stopped stirring.
"Whatever it is, we can do it at home tonight."
"We can't, because you won't be honest at home."
I laid the page on his desk.
"The insurer who covers 118 Linden Court says the owner of the house asked them to cancel my policy and write a new one in Colleen's name. They say it was requested by Carlton Maddox."
