Chapter 13: The Stone
Leo came in out of the wind and shut the door behind him with his heel.
Anders had the blanket in one fist and nothing else on.
He did not move out of the way, and he did not raise his voice.
"Mr. Vasilakis," he said.
"Give her a minute to dress."
Leo didn't look at him.
He looked at the pillowcase in his hand, and then at me on the cot with the wool pulled to my chin.
"I'll wait on the dock," he said.
His voice was gone to gravel.
"I'm not going anywhere."
He went out and left the door open, and the wind filled the shack with rain.
I dressed with my back to the window.
My hands were steady.
That surprised me, after the cot, after the crying.
Anders dressed beside me without a word, and he handed me my sweater and held my wet coat, and I put my arms into it.
"You don't have to talk to him," he said.
"I know."
"I'll stand wherever you tell me."
"By the door," I said.
"Where he can see you."
He nodded and went to stand in the frame with his arms folded and the rain blowing in on his boots.
The tide had come up under the dock, and the planks were black and slick.
Leo stood at the very end of them, facing the gulf, in the coat he'd stood in all night.
He had the white county tag in his left hand and the pillowcase hanging from his right.
I walked out to him and stopped an arm's length away.
He didn't turn.
"You followed us," I said.
"I followed the truck."
"You read the tag out here, in the rain."
"I read it three times," Leo said.
"I know what female, approximately twenty to twenty-five means.
