He Had Me Drowned, Then Wept at My Grave novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: Terms

I drove to the pilot station at one in the morning with my hands so tight on the wheel that my wrists hurt.

Irini was asleep next door with the neighbor's wife, the bat-sleeping husband on the sofa.

I had told them I'd be an hour.

The ground-floor door was locked.

I put his brass key in it, and the key turned, and I hated how easily it did.

The dispatch office was dark except for the green glow of the radar repeater and a lamp over the big oak desk by the window.

Anders was standing at the desk in his oilskins with a ship's chart in front of him and a pencil behind his ear.

He had come in off the water twenty minutes before, and his hair was still wet.

He looked up and saw my face, and put the pencil down.

"He came," he said.

"He was on my porch for an hour."

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

"No."

"Is Irini?"

"She saw him through the chain," I said.

I shut the door behind me.

My voice shook, and I let it.

"You gave me a key," I said.

"I did," he said.

"Before I asked."

"I know.

"I told you I'm sorry."

"You took charge."

"I offered," he said.

"You decided I'd need it," I said.

"You decided what I'd need before I told you."

I crossed the dark room.

I wasn't angry at him.

I knew I wasn't.

I was angry at a man on a porch and a woman at a table and a causeway road.
