Chapter 15: The Elders
Fenny slipped out of bed before dawn and did not wake Cavan.
He dressed in the dark, with the jar of ash inside his coat.
He left the tin on the washstand.
The old councillor kept rooms at the top of the west tower, because he said the stairs kept him honest.
He opened the door in his nightshirt with a candle in his fist and looked Fenny up and down.
"The Prince's doctor," he said. "At this hour."
"The Prince's husband," Fenny said. "May I come in?"
The old man stood aside.
The room was small, and crowded with scrolls, and a kettle was already steaming on the hob.
Fenny did not sit.
"You'll hear a case at noon," he said. "The maid's word, and Roddy's. I want you to hear mine first."
"Yours."
"I have the same condition as Cavan."
The councillor's face did not change.
Fenny had planned for a gasp, and for shouting.
He had planned for a guard.
He had not planned for the old man to set the candle down very carefully and say, "Go on."
So Fenny went on.
He said it plainly, in short sentences.
He said he had flipped as a boy, and taken pills for nine years, and that the pills had never been a treatment.
"They hold down a pull," he said. "When Cavan goes omega, my body goes alpha. When he goes alpha, I go soft. It comes on us at the same second. I've watched it forty times."
"Forty."
"I keep a book."
Fenny took the little notebook from his pocket and put it on the desk.
The councillor did not touch it.
"Why tell me?" he said. "You are the one man in Goldridge who could stand at noon and say nothing."
"Because Roddy wants the pack to believe it is a weakness," Fenny said. "A thing that happens to one man. A secret rot in the Prime."
