Chapter 18: The Old Man's Terms
Willa's POV
They let us out of the guest house at one in the morning and walked us to the front hall like prisoners going to a hearing.
Tate stood by the stairs with a bruise on his jaw.
Margo stood by the window with her arms folded and her eyes on the floor.
The old man sat in a high-backed chair in the middle of the black-and-white tiles, with his cane across his knees.
Jerome stood next to his sister with one hand on her back.
Linnea held her viola case in front of her belly.
"Sit," said the old man.
"No," said Linnea.
He lifted his eyebrows.
"I've been sitting for fifteen months," she said. "I'll stand."
"As you like."
He looked from her to me and back.
"Here is what I propose. It is a good offer, and you will not get a second."
"Both of you will have your children in this house. They will carry my name, they will have the best doctors in the state, and you will want for nothing."
"I'm leaving," said Linnea.
"I haven't finished."
"I don't need you to," she said. "I'm leaving, and I'm taking my daughter, and Jerome's driving."
The old man's hand tightened on the cane.
"A judge has a petition on his desk with Ms. Fenn's name on it. There is another one in a drawer with yours."
"My lawyers can have both filed by breakfast."
"Then file them," Linnea said. "You'll need a good reason for a judge to keep a woman in a house she wants to leave."
"Her husband's signature."
"Then ask my husband."
Every head turned to Tate.
He took a step toward her, and his voice cracked.
"Lin. Baby. Please."
"Don't."
"I love you. I got scared. I was always going to fix it. Just come back to the guest house, and I'll be different."
"You locked a gate."
"For you! For us! You don't know what my father would've done."
