Chapter 20: The Night Before
Jonah's POV
On Friday night Nell stood in the middle of my loft in the green dress, saying one sentence over and over to the brick wall.
"I left because he decided I was worth keeping and not worth promoting."
She stopped.
"Again," I said.
"I left because he decided I was worth keeping and not worth..."
Her voice caught on the last word and she pressed her fist against her mouth.
I put down the glass I was holding.
A small flash drive hung on a chain around her neck, with Lacey's recording on it and two copies in Bea's freezer.
It weighed almost nothing, and she touched it every few minutes.
"I can say it to a camera," she said. "I said it to a hundred and forty people.
"But tomorrow there will be three hundred, and half of them were at the all-hands.
"Most of them clapped."
"Nell."
"They all think I'm sick. Everett has had a week to tell everyone I'm sick."
"Then let them look at you."
"I'm afraid I'll stand there and open my mouth and nothing will come out."
I crossed the floor and stopped in front of her without touching her.
I thought of the years I could have knocked on one door.
She had carried all of this alone, in a building I could see from my own window.
"I could carry the drive," I said.
"No."
"I could speak first."
"No." She looked up at me, and her gray eyes were very bright. "I need you to stand next to me. In front of all of them. Don't say anything for me. Just be seen."
