Chapter 13: The Harbor
He did not call that night, and by Tuesday afternoon I couldn't stand not knowing.
I drove to the Port of Savannah in Posey's Civic with a security badge Verity had talked a guard into issuing.
I wore a hard hat I'd borrowed from a gate attendant who recognized me and then pretended he hadn't.
The terminal was bigger than I had ever let myself imagine.
Stacks of containers rose in blue and orange and rust-red walls on either side of the road.
Beyond them the gantry cranes stood against the sky with their long arms folded.
Not one of them moved.
It was strange to see something that large be still.
A forklift driver waved me toward the east berth.
A crowd of men and women in orange vests had gathered in front of the pilot office.
I stopped at the edge of it.
On the second landing of a steel stair, high above the heads, stood Lachlan.
He was in shirtsleeves, with the cuffs rolled to his elbows and no jacket.
His voice carried over the dock in the flat, steady tone he used when he was afraid.
"I'm not going to lie to you. The credit's gone. The bank froze the fuel account and the Gadsdens called the loan, and that means I don't know when the cranes run again."
Nobody spoke.
"Here's what I do know. Everyone on this shift gets paid through Friday, out of my own pocket. I'll find the rest."
"With what?" a man called from the crowd.
It wasn't hostile.
It was tired.
"With whatever I have left," Lachlan said. "I'm not going to let this family's mess land on your kids' lunch money."
