Chapter 19: The Pilot Dock
Beaufain Pilots was four boats, a rented dock, and a two-story shed on the river east of the container terminal.
Verity drove us there at ten, in the station wagon, and parked beside a pile of rope.
I had seen the Harbor from the front gate once, with its cranes and its blue walls of cargo.
This was a rusting end of that world, with gulls on the pilings and a smell of diesel and salt.
A painted sign over the door said BEAUFAIN PILOTS and under it, in smaller letters, EST. 1931.
The loft windows above the office had a window box with dead geraniums.
"He lives up there," Verity said, not looking at me. "He rents it from the dockmaster."
"The Harbor?" I said.
"Gone. He sold what the bank didn't take. Half of it is Daddy's now, and the rest went to the receiver. He kept the pilot boats and the name."
"He had a company that moved a third of a port."
