Chapter 10: No Pity

A week later I knocked on Nate's door at ten on Saturday night with the boot box under my arm.

He opened it in a gray T-shirt and bare feet.

He had not expected me.

I saw that in the way he stopped with his hand on the frame.

"I read them," I said. "All eleven."

"Jean."

"It took a week. One a night for six nights, and the last five all at once."

He stepped back.

I walked into a small, clean apartment with a couch, a bookshelf of paramedic manuals and a photo of him with his mother on the fridge.

I set the box on the coffee table.

"You didn't have to bring them," he said. "They're yours."

"I know. I brought them because I owe you eleven answers, and I only have one."

I turned to face him.

"I would have come," I said. "To the lake. If I'd known, I would have been there at sunrise, and I would have waited all day with you."

His jaw moved.

He looked at the box, and then he looked at the floor, and then he looked at me.

"I waited at that pavilion until it got dark," he said. "Then I drove back where I came from."

I did not know what to do with that.

He walked to the window and gripped the sill with both hands.

"I want to put him through a wall," Nate said, low. "I've wanted to since the ambulance. Every time I think of fifteen, I want to find his house and take the door off the hinges."

"No," I said.

"Jean."

"I said no pity. That's pity wearing a fist."
