Chapter 15: The Letter

Halina's POV

The cease-and-desist letter lasted four days.

It lay on the bakery counter under a sack of flour while I read it a fifth time.

Piotr read it over my shoulder with his arms crossed.

"Four paragraphs," he said. "Two of them say the same thing."

"They say I'm a thief."

"They say a lawyer is billing by the word."

Marta came out of the back with her hands white to the elbow.

"I'll write them a reply," she said. "In Polish. Babcia can sign it."

"Marta."

"It'll be a very short reply."

The bell over the door rang.

We all looked.

Dominik stood on the threshold in a dark coat with a folded paper in his hand.

He did not come in.

He waited, the way a customer waits to be seated.

"I'd like to talk to you," he said. "Here, out front. Not in the back. I'll stay where you can see me."

"Say it from there."

"Okay."

He held up the paper.

"I fired Lena on Monday."

"I heard."

"She sent the cease-and-desist on her own authority. The company never approved it. I've told the lawyer to withdraw it, and he has. Here's his confirmation," Dominik said.

I took the paper from him with two fingers.

It was a letter from a law firm on Wacker Drive, one paragraph long, withdrawing all claims.

Under it was another sheet.

It was a notarized assignment.

It said that Kral Hospitality and Dominik Kral personally gave up any claim to any recipe authored by Halina Sokol.
