The book was called Table for Two: Desserts from a Chicago Kitchen.
It had a cream cover and a photograph of a plum tart.
The author's name was in gold letters across the bottom.
LENA BARAN.
Marta found it in a bookstore window on Milwaukee Avenue.
She walked into the bakery holding it in both hands.
"There's a launch Thursday," she said. "Six o'clock. Wine and cheese."
I turned the book over.
The back cover said Lena's grandmother had taught her to bake in a village outside Kraków.
"Her grandmother is from Naperville," Marta said. "I looked."
"Can she do that? Put my recipes in a book?"
"She can try."
I opened it to page forty.
The recipe was my tart.
It had my ratios, my plum count and my brown butter.
The headnote began, My Babcia's tart is the reason I love food.
Beside the headnote was a photograph of an index card.
It was written in blue ink, in Polish, slanting hard to the right.
