Chapter 15: Waffles and Pancakes

Kaitlyn's POV

The photograph reached me in the clinic parking lot, under the sodium light.

I had pulled in because I did not want to drive to the loft.

Gabe's text under it said only: Where are you? Is anyone behind you?

I looked in the mirror.

A gray sedan idled at the far end of the lot with its lights off.

I sat very still.

Then the sedan's door opened, and a woman in a leather jacket got out with a duffel bag over her shoulder.

She walked straight toward my window.

"Don't scream," Mindy said, when I rolled it down. "It's me. That's an Uber I took from the Valley, and I already sent him away."

"Somebody sent me a photo of my car."

"I know. He sent it to my phone too. I left the phone in a trash can at a gas station."

She shifted the bag on her shoulder.

"Can I sleep in your clinic?"

"It's a clinic."

"You have a back room. I've watched you carry blankets in there."

"You watched me."

"For three weeks. I told you."

I let her in the side door with my keycard.

The back room had a cot, a shelf of sedation charts and a deep sink, and it smelled of antiseptic and warm fur.

I texted Gabe: She's with me. Go home.

Then I turned my phone off.

Mindy sat on the cot and took off her boots.

She had a hole in the heel of her left sock, and something in my chest gave way that had nothing to do with Glen.

"I'll take the floor," I said.

"There's a floor mat in the supply closet."

"You know where the supply closet is?"

"I'm a very thorough stalker."

I laughed, and my wrist went up to my mouth, and so did hers.

We both lowered our arms at the same moment.
