Chapter 21: The Microphone
The microphone was warm from his hand.
Three hundred faces looked up at me in the chandelier light.
Glen stood a pace behind my shoulder, still smiling, with the glass trophy under his arm.
"Kaitlyn," he said softly, without moving his lips. "Be careful."
I turned the microphone toward my own mouth.
"My name is Kaitlyn Roark," I said. "I'm a vet tech. I'm married to the man who just asked for your forgiveness."
The room stirred.
"Three years ago, I met him at my father's funeral. He told me he had worked with my father. My father had never heard of him."
A hush fell at the nearest tables.
"He read my father's obituary the day it ran. It named two daughters. He circled both of us in red pen, and he kept it in a locked drawer under a photograph of me at the grave."
"Kaitlyn," Glen said, louder.
"He didn't marry me because he loved me. He married me because I was the way to find my sister."
I held out my hand.
Mindy came up the three steps in the green dress and put her hand in mine.
"This is Bridget Sundberg," I said. "Nine years ago she married him. Six years ago she left, and he followed her to Oregon for six weeks."
The owner of the company stood up at her table.
She did not say a word. She put both hands flat on the white cloth and looked at the stage.
Mindy took the microphone from me.
Her hand shook, and she steadied it with the other.
"I'm not going to talk about me," she said. "I want to read you something. It's the last letter my father wrote."
She took the folded page from inside her jacket.
"He wrote it eleven days before he died. He never knew if I got it. I didn't, until last Saturday."
She read it.
She read the hospital room, and the man who called on a Tuesday and said he was her husband.
She read the chair by the window, and the Sunday afternoon, and the line about fixing his hair.
