Chapter 8: Lord Valentine

Lucas kept his hand on the lock and did not turn it.

"No," he said through the door. "You can't come in."

Behind him, Thomas shifted his weight.

"I thought you might say that," Valentine said. "Then may I talk to you out here? I'll stay on the step. I give you my word as a lord."

Lucas looked at the three of them.

Noah shook his head once, fast.

Luke only waited, with his eyes on the door.

"Five minutes," Lucas said.

He pulled his coat from the hook, opened the red door, and stepped out onto the stoop.

The rain had thinned to a mist.

Valentine stood two steps below him with water running off the velvet of his jacket, and up close he was younger than Lucas had expected.

He had a long face, tired eyes and a mouth that tilted when he spoke.

"You are smaller than I thought," he said. "Forgive me. It's meant kindly."

"What do you want?"

"To look at you." He studied Lucas's throat, where the marks stood out. "Noah has been busy."

Lucas did not touch them.

"I'm their manager," he said.

"Yes. That's what the label says." Valentine smiled. "And they're not hungry. I've watched them for two years. They've been thin and strange and cold since the exile, and tonight I watched them play, and every one of them had color. Someone has been feeding them."

"No one is feeding them."

"No blood. I know. I can smell it on you, or rather I can't." Valentine tilted his head. "You've been kind to them, Lucas. That's all anyone needs to know."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because Abysis has noticed."

The mist hung between them.

"The lord of the court has eyes in every club in this city," Valentine said. "Three exiles who were starving a month ago are suddenly warm, and there's a young human on the side of their stage with a clipboard and bruises on his neck. He wants to see you. He will ask politely, the first time."

"And if I say no?"
