Chapter 18: The Upright
"Lift with your knees," Qiu said, "not with your face."
Hanjing had the foot end of an upright and a stair rail in his teeth, almost.
It was the third week of January, a quarter past nine, and the piano weighed two hundred and ten kilos.
They were on a narrow stair in an old building behind the Southern Song road.
The customer, a retired bus driver, stood in his slippers at the top and gave advice.
Zhe took the high end, backing up one step at a time, with his eyes on Hanjing's hands.
"Left a little," Zhe said.
"I am going left."
"You're going tragic. Left."
A sound came out of Hanjing that might have been a laugh.
The upright shifted a centimetre on its straps, and his whole arm went rigid.
"Don't stop," Zhe said. "Stopping is worse. Breathe and push."
"I'm breathing."
"You're making a noise like a kettle."
"That," Qiu said from the landing, "is a man who signed nine hundred contracts and never lifted a thing heavier than a pen."
