Ten days after the first night, Hanjing laid a leather folder on the workbench and slid it across with two fingers.
"What is it?" Zhe asked.
"A contract."
"Is it."
"Read it before you say anything. Please."
Zhe wiped the rosin off his hands and opened the folder.
It was ten pages, neatly typed, with a signature block at the bottom already filled in.
He read the first paragraph and then the second.
The landlord had listed the whole building for sale.
Hanjing proposed to buy it, shop, upstairs rooms and courtyard.
He would give Zhe a lease for life at a rent of one yuan a year.
Qiu would have the same.
There was an allowance, an apartment in a good district, a car, and a sum paid on the first of every month.
Zhe turned a page.
He turned another.
Clause nine began halfway down the fourth one.

He read it again.
Then he put the folder down, squared its edge with the bench, and looked up.
