Chapter 14: The Brunch
Langston didn't argue.
He stood in his mother's sunroom and nodded, once.
Rosalind picked up her tea.
"Well," she said. "That's tidy."
Langston turned to her.
"You're done as chair of the foundation," he said. "I'll call the board tonight."
The cup stopped halfway to her mouth.
"You can't."
"Dad left me the votes. You know that." His voice was very quiet.
I walked out with the tin while they were still looking at each other.
Nobody followed me.
For six weeks, I didn't hear from him.
I baked.
I taught on Saturdays.
The girl with the braid got an interview for a summer program in Hyde Park.
The quiet boy's lemon tarts went on the board at Hargrove's, with his name next to them in chalk.
Wesley walked me up the stairs to my door every night at eight and said good night on the landing.
Every night, he went back down.
At the end of November, an envelope came to the bakery with the Aldridge Foundation seal on it.
It was an invitation to the December donor brunch.
