Chapter 12: Dinner for Two
We were at the diner in ten minutes.
Phillip drove the new black car, and he drove it fast and carefully with both hands on the wheel.
The gray sedan sat across the street with two men in it. They wore dark jackets and sat very still.
"That's them," Maggie said when we came in. She was standing behind the counter with the coffeepot in one hand. "They've been out there for five hours."
"Stay inside," I said.
"Not a chance."
Phillip went out the front door and crossed the street in the noon sun.
I followed him. My heart was going hard.
He stopped at the driver's window of the sedan and knocked on the glass.
The man behind the wheel rolled it down two inches.
"Mr. Chichester," he said. He sounded surprised.
"Who sent you?"
"Your father's office, sir. We were asked to look after Miss Preble."
"Look after her."
"Keep an eye on her, sir. For her safety."
"Her safety." Phillip leaned both hands on the roof of the car. "There's a dozen people in that diner with phones. There's a camera over the cash register, and half of Hartford saw a girl save my life two weeks ago. You've been sitting out here for five hours in front of all of them."
The man's jaw tightened.
"Here's what you'll do," Phillip said, quiet and flat. "You'll drive back to my father's office and tell him that I saw you. Tell him I know what you were told to do. Tell him if Hallie so much as stubs her toe, I will hand every word he said to me this morning to the first reporter in the state."
"Sir..."
"Say it back."
The man looked at his partner. His partner looked straight ahead.
