Chapter 21: The Valet Stand

I ran.

Phillip was beside me before I reached the doors, and Lucille was a step behind us in her heels.

We burst out onto the front terrace of the Grand.

Marble steps ran down to a circular drive with a fountain in its center. The valet stand stood at the near edge, brightly lit.

Everard was already at the stand.

"My car," he said to the young valet. "The silver one."

"Sir, I'll bring it around..."

"Give me the key."

The valet looked at the ballroom doors, where two hundred people were spilling out onto the terrace behind us.

He handed over the key.

"Dad!" Phillip shouted.

Everard did not turn.

I went down the steps after him, and my gold skirt caught on the stone.

"You cut his brakes," I said.

That stopped him.

He stood with the key in his hand and one foot on the drive, and two hundred people on the terrace went silent behind me.

"Say it, Mr. Chichester. They're all here."

"Prove it, Hallie."

"Why me?" My voice shook. "I was seven. I never asked you for anything."

"You started to remember." He said it flatly, to my face, in front of everyone. "Headlights. A ring on a wheel. I could not have you remember."

"So you used your son."

"I used what I had." His mouth twisted. "I did not plan for the boy to be hurt. That was never in my arrangement. He was supposed to drive at you, and the brakes were supposed to do the rest."

Lucille made a sound I will never forget.

Phillip stood on the bottom step with his fists clenched and his father's words still in the air.
