Chapter 12: Evidence

Sonya walked across the gravel in her white suit, and the cameraman swung to follow her.

The reporter held the microphone out to her at once.

"Linnea," Sonya said warmly. "I'm so sorry to arrive unannounced. Darlene told me she was coming and I thought, someone should be here who can help."

"Help whom?"

"Everyone," Sonya said, and turned to Darlene with real concern. "Darlene, you've had a shock. Sit down in the car."

Darlene stumbled to the sedan and sat sideways in the back seat with her feet on the road.

I watched Sonya take control of the whole scene in under a minute.

She turned back to the camera and opened the leather folder.

"I'd like to say this clearly, for the record," she said. "That recording has been edited. I'd never take anything that belonged to Linnea. The notebooks she's concerned about are in the Lantern Records archive for safekeeping, and she's welcome to them at any time."

"Today," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"I'd like them today. Right here. You said at the arena parking lot they were in a place only you could reach, and that they were insurance. I assume that's the archive."

The reporter's head turned.

Sonya's smile held, but one corner of it went still.

"I think you misunderstood me, Linnea."

"I don't think I did."

"We can discuss this inside, in private, without cameras."

"I'd rather discuss it here," I said. "I've been in private for six years."
