Chapter 17: The Porch Light
The notice said Songbird Works LLC had been formed three years ago, with my signature on a page I did not remember signing.
Sonya had slid it into a stack of renewals.
I read it standing on the bungalow porch while Darlene watched me from the curb with her pearls on.
I gave the lawyer his envelope back unopened.
"My own lawyer will answer this," I said. "Tell your client a company can't sing."
He did not understand me.
Colt did.
The next morning we walked into the arena in Nashville with the twins between us.
The crew was setting up for the last full rehearsal.
Men on ladders hung lights above the stage, and the band stood around in a loose half circle, tuning.
They all went quiet when they saw me.
They had known for years who I was, and not one of them had ever said so out loud.
"We need the stage for ten minutes," Colt said.
The production manager looked at his clipboard.
"Sonya's office told us nobody on the platform but the band."
"Sonya doesn't work here," Colt said. "I do."
The production manager looked at him for a long moment.
Then he put down the clipboard and called the ladder men down.
Colt lifted Birdie and Gus onto road cases in the front row and gave Gus a pair of the big noise-canceling headphones, which came down over his ears and most of his face.
Then he took the microphone from its stand, walked across the stage, and held it out to me.
"It's yours," he said.
"Colt."
