Chapter 16: The Doctored Photo

By seven the next morning the photo had four hundred reactions.

I read the comments standing in the boathouse kitchen, in my socks, with the coffee going cold.

"Wow. The husband too?"

"Cold. She got the guy and the school and now she's coming for the little sister."

"Mrs. Landry says the notebook is faked. Honestly it looks faked."

"Sutton always plays the victim."

Half of them had been in the chat when I read the notebook out loud on the wharf.

It had taken them less than a day to forget.

Roan came in from the dock with his hair wet and read over my shoulder.

I felt his whole body go still.

"I never touched her," he said.

"I know."

"I want you to hear me say it."

"I was in the corridor on Wednesday," I said. "I heard all of it."

He closed his eyes.

"I heard her ask, and I heard you say 'out,'" I said. "I also heard four seconds in the middle."

"Four seconds."

"I counted."

He opened his eyes, and they were the color of the lake in winter.

"Four seconds is how long it took me to work out how to throw her out without making her a martyr," he said. "I should have told you that night."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because you were carrying enough."

"Roan." I put the phone face down. "Carry it with me, or don't carry it. I won't hold it against you either way."
