Chapter 17: Tripp's Receipt
We sat on the iron cleats at the edge of the quay, with the lake slapping below.
Tripp Danvers kept his hands between his knees.
The four of them stood a few yards off, not hiding that they were listening.
Nash held a coffee out to Tripp without a word, and Tripp took it.
"Say it from the start," I said. "Say it where they can hear."
"Okay."
He swallowed.
"Two days before your SAT, your stepmother called me.
"She'd gotten my number off Camryn's phone.
"She said Camryn had a crush on me and was too shy to say it.
"She said she'd pay for the trouble of a conversation."
"For the trouble," Nash said.
"That's what she called it." Tripp's ears had gone red. "Three hundred dollars, and I had to be in your garage at ten after four on the fourteenth.
"She told me not to stop until somebody opened the door.
"She sent the money that morning.
"I thought it was a dumb prank, Sutton.
"I thought everybody was in on it."
I took the phone from him.
The receipt filled the whole screen.
Sent: June 14, 8:02 a.m.

At the top, where it said who had paid, was my stepmother's full name.
