Chapter 24: Landry
Hartwell had a lawn so green it looked painted.
We drove in on Monday at five to nine, in a convoy of three.
My mother's Honda led, because I asked it to, with my whole life in the trunk and the back seat.
Roan's black truck came behind with his window down and one arm out.
Nash and the Eyebrow and the Silent One followed in the Eyebrow's pickup.
It had a mattress strapped to the roof that nobody had asked for.
"It's a gift," Nash said, climbing out. "From the pot."
"It doesn't fit in a dorm."
"It will if you believe in it."
A boy in a lanyard at the curb stared at the four of them.
He looked at the ink up their arms and the black suits they had put on for the occasion.
The shirts were once again open to the third button.
"Welcome to Hartwell," he said, with some caution.
"Thank you," said the Silent One, in his deep slow voice.
The boy took a small step backward.
The residence was a brick hall with ivy and a front door that stuck.
