Chapter 15: The Study
My father's house had not changed in the seven weeks since I walked out of his church.
The same lamps were lit in the same windows, and the same two men stood on the stoop.
Tiberio went up the steps ahead of me, and the men stepped aside.
I had left Rosa in Ruggero's arms in the back of a car at the curb.
"No guns in the house," I'd told him.
"I'll sit right here," he said. "I'll sit here all night."
My father was in his study with a pot of tea and the green banker's lamp.
He rose when I came in, and he kissed my cheek like I had come home from school.
"Marisa. You look thin."
"I had a baby."
"You look wonderful. Sit. Tiberio, close the door."
My brother closed it and stayed with his back against it.
My father poured me tea I didn't want.
"I heard about the little meeting in Chicago," he said. "Ruggero is a sentimental boy. He always was. His father would be ashamed."
"His father gave the order."
"His father gave a great many orders." He sat. "Let me tell you how this goes, tesoro. There was a bad business a long time ago. It's finished. A little girl got a home out of it, and she has had a good life."
"She has had a leash."
"She's had everything she ever asked for."
"From the man you let drive the car."
He smiled, patiently, and set down his cup.
"What do you want, Marisa? Tell me. The Salerno wedding in June? A trust for the baby? I'll have the papers drawn up tomorrow, in her name, so no one can ever touch it."
