Chapter 13: Two Wives' Worth
Bram stood with the scissors rattling in his fist, and nobody in room eleven said a word.
"Between the clamps," I said. "One cut. Then you're done."
He cut the cord.
His hand shook so badly that the neonatal nurse had to steady his wrist, and the blades closed on the second try.
The baby never noticed.
She lay on her mother's chest with her fists up by her ears, furious and pink.
"Thank you, Mr. Pollard," I said. "Please stand by her head."
"Ines." It came out as a croak. "What are you doing here?"
"My job."
"You were supposed to be stranded. You were supposed to be at home."
"I know what you thought," I said.
I turned my attention to the work, because the placenta was still in and my patient was still bleeding.
I gave Sabine a gentle push on her belly and a slow pull on the cord, and the placenta came away whole.
I checked it on the tray, front and back, and nothing was missing.
"Pitocin," I said to the resident, and he hung the bag.
Sabine's bleeding slowed under my hand.
She had a second-degree tear, which is common, and I threaded the needle and began to repair it.
