Chapter 20: The Dress
My lawyer came to the house on Friday night with a folder and a bottle of wine she said she'd earned.
She laid the divorce petition on my kitchen table, and I read every page.
It asked for the divorce, my name left as it had always been, and the house.
"It's filed," she said. "He'll be served Monday morning at his office."
She sipped her wine.
"I wanted to serve him tomorrow night at the gala, in front of everyone."
"Please don't," I said.
"I thought you'd say that."
"I don't want a process server in the atrium," I said.
"I want him to walk in there and stand up in front of his bank."
I turned my glass.
"On his own."
She raised her glass.
"He won't touch your house," she said. "That affidavit stays in my drawer until he opens his mouth about it."
"And if he does?"
"Then I take it out," she said, "and read it aloud."
On Saturday afternoon Sabine arrived on my porch with the baby in a car seat and her sister's winter coat buttoned over a borrowed dress.
