Chapter 7: Seven Centimeters

The charge nurse stepped into the hall before Bram could reach the door.

"Mr. Pollard," she said, "the doctor is going in to examine your partner now. Family waits outside during an exam."

"I'm the father," Bram said. "I'm not going to wait in a hallway."

"You'll wait in the lounge, and I'll bring you coffee, and you'll thank me for it."

I walked past him with my mask up and my eyes down.

He turned his head to follow me, and for one second I thought that was it.

He only said, "Thank God. Finally. Somebody who looks like she knows what she's doing," and let the nurse steer him away.

I went into room eleven and shut the door.

Sabine Rowe lay propped against the pillows with her hair damp on her forehead and both hands on the rail.

She was a very young twenty-eight.

She had round freckled cheeks, light brown hair in a messy ponytail, and big eyes swollen from crying.

The monitor over her bed showed a steady heartbeat for the baby, and a pressure that had crept up to 148 over 94.

"Hi," she said, and tried to smile. "Sorry. I'm kind of a mess."
