Chapter 32: Landmarks
The chair of the board closed her leather folder.
"The funds will fight you," she said.
"Then they can vote."
They voted at four o'clock that afternoon, upstairs, with the Heron under the skylight below us.
The funds and the cousins voted to sell.
My thirty percent voted no.
My father had flown in from Palm Beach and sat at the far end of the table, not in his old chair.
He put his glasses on to read the motion.
"Forty percent," he said. "With my daughter."
It passed.
I called Troy from the hotel parking lot.
He was quiet so long I thought the call had dropped.
"The ice house too?" he said.
"All four. And the lease. It's yours. For good."
I heard him set something down.
Then I heard him yell across the yard to the crew, and I heard the whole crew yell back.
In October I drove myself to Salt Creek.
I had my own car by then. A used blue hatchback with a dent in the door and no GPS in the dash.
I left Palm Beach at six in the morning.
I passed the peach stand with the plywood alligator. The pelicans on the light poles.
The gas station with the blue canopy.
I didn't miss the turn.
I didn't pull over once.
